Why you are my (S)Hero…a love letter to my provider.
by Shannon Scandozza, BS
For the last 47 years, most of my life has been spent in a provider clinic, hospital operating room, waiting room, cafeteria, or chapel.
I am a survivor, I am an orphan, and I represent much of the population that relies on the selfless service of a provider to live. Each breath I take is orchestrated by design and takes an entire village of specialists to move forward. I am NO ONE and yet I am EVERYONE.
To my provider: I love you; YOU are the reason that I am alive today. As I sit in the cold, echoing chasm of uncertainty awaiting yet another test result, I can hear your muffled cries. While you are busy researching and seeking answers to my problems, yours lay idle and unsolved. While you provide me with comfort and solutions, you are suffering in silence. While you provide me with hope and inspiration, you are wondering if you made the right choice. While I eat, you starve. While I spend time with my loved ones, you neglect yours. While you treat patients out of your own pocket, your bills go unpaid.
I want you to know how truly GRATEFUL I am that you chose a life of servitude. It’s because of you that I have the strength to take on each day. It’s because of you that I am confident enough to brave this world. It’s because of YOU that I have the ability to do it without fear as I know you will ALWAYS be there.
You are not perfect, and that’s why I love you. You are human, you are divine, and you are the reason I want to help make this world a better place. You are honest with me, you listen to me, you counsel and guide me, and you make me feel heard. I am not a number, a sheep, or another code for your billing department…I am your patient and your friend.
So, thank you…. for everything you do EVERY DAY. You are an #inspiration and your #kindness has not gone unnoticed. You are amazing, talented, caring, and compassionate and I am honored to be treated by you.
